A Little History of our Antique Expo:
In 1967, the Gen. James Breckenridge Chapter,
DAR, was looking for ways to raise funds to support the many
programs of their organization. The then Regent of the Chapter, Nita
Willis, an amateur antique dealer herself, convinced the ladies of
the Chapter that developing one big project was far better than
trying to have a dozen bake sales during the year and certainly
preferable to asking the members to contribute out of their own
pockets! She proposed that they hold an antique show as that
project.
The first DAR Antique Show was held in 1967 at the Roanoke National
Guard Armory on Reserve Avenue with 20 hand picked dealers from
around the region. The show lasted one day and was a rousing
success. Admission to the show was $1.00 and the ladies netted
$800.00 profit from their efforts.
Forty-four years later, the DAR Antique Show has grown into one of
the premier antique shows in the state. The three day event, now
called the Roanoke Valley Antiques Expo, is held at the Roanoke
Civic Center during the third weekend of July each year. The show
hosts over 60, still handpicked, dealers from all over the US. There
is no flea market merchandise, reproductions, or crafts. The show
offers only quality antiques from professional dealers. Merchandise
includes antique silver, glassware and china from all over the
world, furniture and accessories from many different periods of
American, European and Oriental history, estate jewelry, household
and personal curiosities from years past, antique rugs, old and rare
books and magazines, and many other unusual and unique items.
We are so excited to see you there this year!
